Back Some Germanic Deities

Tiew (or Tyr) is the deity of justice and good government.

Woden (or Odin) is a deity of war and death, but also the deity of poetry and wisdom. He hung for nine days, pierced by his own spear, on the world tree. Here he learned powerful songs, and the secret of the runes. Woden can make the dead speak to question the wisest amongst them.

Thor is the deity of thunder. He is generally depicted as red-headed and bearded. He is a son of Woden. Thor was usually portrayed as a large, powerful man with a red beard and eyes of lighting. He was very popular as the protector of both deities and humans against the forces of evil. His greatest enemy is Jormungand, the Midgard Serpent.

Frigg is the wife of Woden, and the most senior of the female deities. She is the patron of marriage and motherhood and the frith-weaver of the community.

Freya is a deity of love and fertility, and the most beautiful and propitious of the female deities. She is a symbol of sensuality and was called upon in matters of love. She loves music, spring and flowers, and is particularly fond of the elves. She excels in magic.

Frey is the deity of prosperity.

Balder is the deity of light, joy, purity, beauty, innocence, and reconciliation. Son of Woden and Frigg,, he was loved by both deities and men and was considered to be the best of the deities. He had a good character, was friendly, wise and eloquent, although he had little power of his own.

Wayland is a blacksmith and craftsman and he understands all technology.

Loki is the deity of trickery.
