ANGLO-SAXON LEGENDS The Anglo-Saxons loved to gather in the great Lord’s Halls to both tell, and listen to stories. They believed in things like monsters, giants and witches, and their legends were full of such beings. The most famous of the Anglo-Saxon heroes was a young man called Beowulf who was a Geat. Geats were a group of warriors who lived in what is now known as southern Sweden. Beowulf was very brave and travelled to Denmark To kill a fearsome monster called Grendel. Not only did he have to kill Grendel, he also had to kill Grendel’s mother. This took him a whole day and a lot of strength and courage. When both the monsters were dead Beowulf was able to free the people of the kingdom where Grendel and his mother had frightened so many people. Brave Beowulf was made the King of Geatland where he reigned for many years. One day a fire breathing dragon came to Geat because it believed that some of the townsfolk had stolen his treasure. King Beowulf was forced to protect his people by fighting and killing the dragon, but he was wounded in the fight and later died. Beowulf was a true hero and was given a hero’s funeral. |
