Back Angels, Saints & Alfredic Fellowships 29th Aug 2005

Saints & Angels

Saints also Angels

Obviously a Saint was a live person, but their spirit-form or memory is rather like an Angel - in fact I can't think of any crucial difference between the two?

Alfred is our Guardian Angel

So thus we can talk about the 'Angel of Saint Alfred the Great' - the 'Guardian Angel' of the Anglo-Saxons, who helps us in our dealings with the other Angels in Heaven.

Jesus also an Angel

If Jesus is treated as a Saint, then he also becomes an Angel. Angel Balder and Angel Jesus are then both possible Angels of Christ.

Alfredanism & Christianity

The big difference seems to be that Christianity says (I think) that Christ is the only way to God, and that anything that is not of Christ is of Satan.

For Alfredanists all the Angels can play their part in keeping the balance of Heaven, and pleasing God. (This includes the 'bad ones' - including Lucifer and Sorath - sometimes it may be good to hate)

Alfredic Fellowships

An Alfredic Fellowship involves getting together with others with the purpose of serving God in the best way we can.

We look to the Angel Woden, above all, to advise us.

For a start we must strive to keep alive the flame of the True Word of God. (i.e. the 'rules of heaven' )

We also need to have a good understanding of the world and its relationship to heaven. (i.e. discern where Angels or Elves are at work in the world)

This can only be fully achieved with 'Enlightenment' - a state of mind in which we can see things clearly as they are without emotional reactions distorting our view.

We can only work towards Enlightement if we are Free to do so. We thus need the Angel Thor to help us defend our Freedom of Thought against those who wish to control us.

We can also only serve God if we are alive. Thus again we ask Thor and Woden for help in practical matters - such as how to ride through the dangers of Pandemic Disease.

Being Active

The idea of a fellowship is really that it is inward looking, concerned for the education and welfare of its members. However it serves the beginnings of an outward purpose if it can maintain an island of independence in an ocean of monocracy. Such an island can be the base from which a Company of Saint Alfred may be launched. However the Alfredic Society does not try and regulate Companies of Saint Alfred, which are considered to be outside the Church. Alfredanists may of course find it better to join existing non-Alfredic organisations and work within them.

Getting Started

Needs somebody to take the lead and attract others of like mind who wish to meet together on a regular basis. Ideally meetings would be in people's homes once they have got to know each other. Care should be taken to create a group of people who will be able to get on well, and build strong bonds of trust with each other while also having complementary skills. Premium is placed on building a strong team. There is no requirement to take in everybody who knocks at the door.

Alfredic Fellowships are all self-governing bodies and are subject to no binding higher authority. Each Fellowship is responsible for its own conduct in the sight of God and should not follow others blindly. One person in a Fellowship is head of the Fellowship and is final judge of what happens.

A Fellowship should pay attention both to the care and welfare of its members for its own sake, and to what is needed in order to develop their minds and their characters in a direction which will be useful.

An aim is to develop people's understanding of the world, and the underlying forces at work, so that they are better able to take action and achieve the effect they desire. A second aim is to develop people's character so that they have the inner resources needed to take action. A third aim is to develop people's sense of morality so that they are desirous to do good.

Activities could include asking each person to bring in some short article they've found on the Internet to read out and discuss with the group.
