Jottings of thoughts on New Christian Socialism Our values - We sometimes look at the workings of life as a whole, and not always just one part at a time - We want to see a righteous balance of power between different bodies. Often this means a roughly equal balance of power so that when negotiations happen between them they will most likely strike a deal which is fair to both. - We cannot judge the goodness of a particular way of doing, without paying attention to the results of doing things that way - The best people to lead us are those who have both good intentions and wisdom. - It matters who leads us, so we should not leave such a matter as choosing the leader to an arbitrary or hidden process. - For people to judge what are good and bad actions they need to be able to see what consequence any particular action will have. Therefore the social and economic processes should not be so large or complex that it is impossible for people to grasp them. - In a society where people's time and activity is for sale to the highest bidder, it really matters who has the most money and what their intentions are when they spend it. - A good society will manage how much money is at the disposal of each person. - The smaller the process, the easier it is to grasp, and also the more likely it is any individual can have an impact on it. Other factors being equal it is beneficial for processes to be as small as possible. - An institution works by many people each performing an appropriate function. If people seek to use their position to pursue an agenda that is not the legitimate agenda of the institution then this damages the institution. - Having the character, wisdom and ability to be a good leader is not something innate in all of us. People need to gain the right experiences to develop themselves to become better leaders. Even with similar opportunity not all people will end up as a good as everyone else. So then we need to choose the best ones out of those available. - People vary in their intentions. Some are concerned only for their own personal welfare. Some are concerned to increase the common good. Some seek the prospering of the people group they identify with, even at the expense of other people in other groups. Thus it matters what group a person identifies with. |
